Just a few more views of Calais

Theres something about fishermen that I think is interesting.  Perhaps they're Dagon or Cthulhu Cultists.  Or maybe they're in league with the Deep Ones.  Who knows.  They're just interesting people.

And the light house.  I'd love to live in a light house.

Calais Light House

The Calais Lighthouse (French: Phare de Calais) is located in Calais in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The Lighhouse is located in the residential streets near the Port of Calais and is a significant landmark as well as a navigational aid to ships and ferries using the Straits of Dover.

Gauloise Cigarettes

Since yesterday, we got some matches, today..... cigarettes.

In the past, particularly in Europe, smoking was a socially acceptable activity, and quite normal.  In France, Gauloises were one of the most popular brands and were considered patriotic, and that they supported French "heartland values".  It was associated with the cigarette-smoking "poliu" (a slang term for French soldiers in the trenches), and later with resistance fighters during the Vichy Regime.

Print it out, cut it out, and fold on the lines.  Glue the tabs to make it into a box-ish shape.  You might want to fill it with rolled paper tubes mocked up to look like cigarettes, or with cigarettes if you're into that sort of thing (if you chose to do this, its my understanding that filtered Gauloises didn't come out into the 1950s).

Might be something found in someones pocket (and give a clue to where they're from....), or might be just an offering from a employee on the Orient Express to a stressed character.

The possibilities are endless.  Just dont get Cancer.  We know smoking causes cancer - however as Call of Cthulhu players, the question is..... Cancer or Insanity.....

Calais

Horror on the Orient Express properly starts in London.  When the players first step foot on French soil, they do so through the port at Calais, before going to Paris to board the Orient Express itself.  After disembarking the ferry from Dover England, players will have to go through a Customs inspection (which is an opportunity to screw with players, or for comedy).

The old part of the town, Calais proper (known as Calais-Nord), is situated on an artificial island >surrounded by canals and harbours. The modern part of the town, St-Pierre, lies to the south and southeast. In the centre of the old town is the Place d'Armes, in which stands the former Hôtel-de-ville, now the town hall and police offices. The belfry belongs to the 16th and early 17th century. Close by is the Tour du Guet, or watch-tower, a structure dated to the 13th century which was used as a lighthouse until 1848 when a new lighthouse was built by the port. The church of Notre-Dame, was built during the English occupancy of Calais. Calais is also a notable fishing port and a centre for fish marketing and lace industry for which the town is also famed.
